We will give a listening test on Friday, Oct. 16 during Music class. The test will only include five pieces of music to memorize, but for students chosen for the team, there are 10 songs on the official UIL Music list that must be memorized (Titles and Composers).
For Students Selected to Compete:
UIL Contest (Music): Thurs., January 21, 2027
Students compete for individual and team awards.
Students listen to and identify short excerpts from 10 musical selections.
Students receive points for identifying the correct composer, correct spelling of the composer, and recognition of the music title. They WILL have a word bank with composer names.
Students chosen for the team will practice at school, but also need to practice at home for 5–10 minutes a day. Keep it fun and celebrate progress instead of worrying about getting every answer right. (Please see study tips)
STUDY TIPS for Home
1. Play “Guess That Song!”
Play a music selection without showing the title. Ask your child, “Do you know which piece this is?” Start with two choices if they need help.
Parent tip: Play the beginning of the piece first, then gradually practice other sections.
2. Make silly memory clues
Create a funny phrase, drawing, or story for each piece and its composer. Let your child help make the clues.
Example: Connect a composer's name to a funny character or a picture they will remember.
3. Play a matching game
Write titles on one set of cards and composers on another. Have your child match them. Start with three pieces and add more as they improve.
4. Draw what the music sounds like
Play a selection and ask your child to draw what it makes them imagine. Is it a storm, a dance, a parade, or a peaceful day? This helps them connect a piece with its unique sound and mood.
5. Use car rides for listening practice
Play the recordings on the way to school or activities. Ask your child to identify a piece before revealing the answer. Even a few minutes of listening adds up!
6. Have a family music challenge
Take turns guessing pieces. Give a point for the correct title and another for the composer. Let your child quiz the adults, too!
7. Review the tricky ones
Keep a short list of pieces your child misses. Practice those a little more often, but always include familiar favorites to build confidence.
